What is a Foreign Trade Zone?

Importing and exporting just got easier in Niagara

Single-point of Access

Niagara is the first region in Ontario to be made a Foreign Trade Zone Point.

This unique designation by the Government of Canada forms a public-private task force comprised of federal, provincial, regional, municipal and business managers. The foreign trade zone provides access to a variety of business support services, educational facilities, mentorship, advice and more.

The Niagara Foreign Trade Zone provides a “one window approach” with a team dedicated to boosting international trade for companies across Niagara. We are your single-point of access to information on export-related government policies and programs.

Tax and Duties Deferrals

Together, the duty and tax benefits of these programs are comparable to the advantages provided by foreign trade zones in other countries. Unlike traditional foreign trade zones, which tie businesses to a location that may not be ideal for them, our program offers companies geographic flexibility.

Duty Deferral Program

Provides three components that you can use individually or in combination depending on the unique needs of your company:

  • Customs bonded warehouse
  • Duty relief program
  • Duty drawback on exported goods

Export Distribution Centre Program

Allows companies to purchase products in Canada without paying Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) up front on transactions of $1,000 or more, if the products are to be exported.

Exporters of Processing Services Program

Allows businesses to import goods tax-free, if those goods are foreign-owned and are exported within four years.
